in that case is no longer with us. >> when you say that officers aren't feeling great here, some of them, is it because of doubt that it's over? >> well, again, if it were your family that was placed in jeopardy, not knowing for certain that the person that was threatening your family is no longer around and the threat no longer exists, that's a concern. and so there are some families who are literally traumatized and they have young children. they have people who have schools that their kids go to and there's great fear still, so that's a trauma that they're going to have to recover from. chaser has seen in hattiesburg. he's joning us on the telephone. john, i am here as well with our meteorologist chad myers. tell us what you saw. >> good evening, breanna. i originally picked up the tornado as it met out of marion county, mississippi. there was an initial report that came out of their emergency management that the tornado had struck several homes and people. from there i was able to pick it up about ten miles to the west of hattiesburg and tracked it into town. the tornado itself on the west side of the interstate was indeed larger than the eastern side of the interstate. we've been able to go back and look at our video in the last couple of hours since the tornado moved through at about 5:10 p.m. central time. i didn't hear sirens over there but as we moved into the downtown area towards the college campus, those sirens were loud and proud. i also want to give a shout out to the local fire department. as the tornado was paralleling highway 98 and moving into the city, they were out there blocking traffic to keep folks from driving into the tornado as well as ther

:00 p.m. out west. i'm miguel marquez. if you're just tuning in, thanks for joining us. these are the top stories we're following in the cnn newsroom. new details about the murders of two military veterans, one a former navy s.e.a.l., chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield were shot and killed in ft. worth texas. the man who pulled the trigger is a veteran who kyle may have been trying to help with ptsd. susan candiotti joins us live with more. what do we know about how this happened? >> well, got some brand new information during the press conference. first of all, we learned about an alleged confession. and police say they think they also have found the murder weapon, when they describe as a semiautomatic handgun that was found at the suspect's house. let's back up a little bit. after the double shooting at that gun lodge, police say the suspected shooter who's 25-year-old eddie ray ralph took off in kyle's pickup truck. then they said that he went to his sister's house and told her and his brother what had happened, and then left that house. that's when the sister called the po

martin, artist, activist chuck dee joins to us talk about his new project "beyond trayvon." you're live in the "cnn newsroom." and good morning, thank you so much for being with me. i'm carol costello. we begin this morning with what's being called the deadliest hot air balloon accident in the world in at least 20 years. 14 tourists killed today when a balloon exploded in the southern egyptian city of luxor. it's the site of some of egypt's most famous ruins. these were shot just before the explosion. rez reza sayah joins us this morning. >> reporter: this hot air balloon dropped 1,000 feet, the empire state building is a little more than 1,200 feet so this was a lengthy drop, officials say at least 19 people were killed, this incident happening in the city of luxor in southern egypt, the site of some of the most famous ancient ruins. officials saying 21 people were on board, almost all of them with the exception of the pilot were tourists, among them hong kong nationals, japanese nationals, british, the french. the operator of this hot air balloon was sky cruise. obviously there's goin

steenkamp only 29 years old found dead at pistorius' home. joining us now is robyn curnow, in south africa. what is the latest, robyn? >> hi there. this much we know. oscar pistorious will be formally charged with murder on friday morning, tomorrow, south african time. he's going to spend the night in jail here after quite a tranlgic set of events today. what do we know, is that his girlfriend was shot dead, initial ll lly reports suggeste had mistaken her for being an intruder. the police recently come out and said they never said anything of the sort, that's not the line of questioning they're looking at and they've hinted at previous domestic disturbances at his house. either way, this is a tragedy, a 30-year-old model has lost her life and oscar pistorius, no doubt one of the most famous south africans out there spending the night in jail for her murder. >> there are witnesses and there was an interview this morning. >> neighbors? >> we're talking about neighbors that heard things that happened earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place. >> so you just heard a brief statem

very, very much. >> so eerie. robin curnow joins us now. we hear pistorius may have feared someone breaking into the house and that's what happened. were there signs that reeva had planned to stay for the night? >> reporter: just to go back to that, i've heard that last message from her over and over again in the last 24 hours, and it still gives me the chills. it's just so sad, isn't it? but in terms of what she was planning to do that night, it seems, according to an official close to the investigation, that she was going to be at her boyfriend's house spending the night. they've apparently foupd her overnight bag as well as her ipad in the room. so that in a way does sort of change that initial speculation that oscar had been surprised. perhaps she had snuck in for a valentine's surprise, and that's why he had shot her. it was a terrible mistake. she still don't know what the details are, what the context is. why shoot somebody through a closed bathroom door? still no real understanding of the motive behind that. i think it's this confusion and the sense of unanswered questions

because of washington's host. for the rest of us, the white house is pointing out how spending cuts in almost every federal program and department are going to affect each state. let's go to a couple of them. for instance, north dakota, it stands to lose funding for ten of its public schools. and 200 kids will be cut from head start. 2,000 civilian defense employees will face furlough. in ohio, that state stands to lose 350 teachers and cut 2,500 preschoolers from head start. 26,000 defense furloughs are expected there as well. to california now. 320 schools are going to lose funding. 64,000 defense furloughs. almost 16,000 fewer children will be vaccinated in that state. pretty tough to see those numbers. in fact, i want to bring in my cnn colleague, wolf blitzer in washington and ali velshi here in new york as well. ali, let me start with you. the numbers seem to be staggering when you look at them state by state. overall when you hear $85 million to hit on friday, people across the country might say, that's a good start. but it's not -- it doesn't stop there. there's a lot more t

. the city hopes bostonians are. certainly they and new englanders are used to huge nor'easters and blizzards like this. 35 years ago, you had the storm of '78, when they had more than 27 inches. this could rival those record amounts. we'll have to see what happens. but as of now, noontime is zero hour. a snow emergency has gone into effect and now people are being told that's it, get off the streets. if your car is there, it's going to ghettet towed. so certainly if take you a look at the store shelf, they are empty. it is clear that people have been fwg out within the last 24, 48 hours since these warnings began. buying all kinds of essential supplies, including nonperishable foods, water, batteries flashlight, maybe portable radios, make egg sure their batteries are charged, making slur they have cash on hand, making sure that they he their tanks filled up with gas. and of course all kinds of snow equipment also is at the ready. they have more than 43,000 tons of salt ready to hit the road. so people here are bracing for that big storm and as you can see, the snow is not too bad
